Teachers take a risk! Deerfield Beach Middle School is a
Health and Wellness magnet school in Broward County, Florida.
Principal Vince Alessi and Magnet Coordinator, Dr. Regina
Delpino agreed to integrate Generation FIT teams into math,
social studies, computer, reading and language arts classes in
6th, 7th and 8th grades. Over 40 students were trained
to lead and manage the use of a dance video game, In The
Groove, right in the classroom.
Teachers
are amazed: After just 5 weeks, Sheila
Weinstein - a Wilson reading teacher- was beyond thrilled with
the changes in some of her most challenging students.
Rather than having to deal with tardiness, disengagement in
the learning process and frustrated-challenged readers, Ms
Weinstein saw her students:
- Race to class on time
- Encourage peers to complete
assignments
- Follow directions
- Focus on work and listening
- Practice leadership
- Be supportive to peers
Teachers were delighted to see the
three-person Generation FIT teams functioning well in the
learning environment. As students learned the physiology and
brain research behind WHY their teachers allowed the dance
games in class, they began to internalize new awareness of how
the program was helping them with both fitness and academic
success. These teachers and students tell their story in
our new "Middle School Teacher Training DVD" available in
February 2008. Look for quantitative
research by Dr. Ann Maloney of Maine and more great stories
.
More than 200 research studies have proven a direct
link between ten minutes of rhythmic, aerobic
exercise and increased academic success and focus in
cognitive tasks (like reading and math) for students
of varied learning styles and needs.
